More about this Interview.

The tweeterview as recorded:

Q1:
"Hi Guy, thanks for agreeing to do this interview with me on Tweeterview :)"

great to try out something new, go easy on me!

More on Q1...
Will do :)
Q2:
"I guess first off,can you tell us a bit abt yourself? How old are you, where are you from in Aus & where are you now?"
Q3:
"You're a freelance journo - so why Germany, and do you have a main area of interest that you report on?"

Back in 2004 I took up an opportunity to work at the German broadcaster, Deutsche Welle. Later I went freelance

Q4:
"So my main interest in following you is the social media, mobile journalism & "Future of Journalism" aspect #foj . One of the first times .."
More on Q4...
..I came across you was live video reporting via Qik, in Tbilisi,Georgia. What was that&how did the medium aid your reporting?

At least someone was watching! The April demos in Tbilisi were a great opp. to test out mobile reporting using a Nokia N82

I was on assignment filming for the UN. But when the demos kicked off I was doing live Q&A's for DW-TV

Having reasonable 3G network speed also let me test Qik, Utterz, Twitpic etc under real conditions

More on Q4...
That's great. So at the time,& in hindsight, what do you think of the capabilities (pros & cons) of those platforms under pressure?

Twitter search using #tbilisi was also useful extra layer for keeping on top of developments

Live streaming video in the hands of a journalist can be very powerful. Uploading images from the field can help verify events

Audio is also useful to give analysis on the run. Main probs with say Twitter search is filtering for accurate info

with 2 phones, Qik/Bambuser also offers you a crude live video interview capability

More on Q4...
I agree with the power of the live streaming video...there's also the aspect that, were "they" to try, they can't delete your footage
More on Q4...
I like the sound of that "live interview" with 2 phones, but we won't get into techie stuff just now :)
Q5:
"Some international reporters have mentioned the benefit of having a "lower profile" by working alone with a small video camera instead of .."

Journalists unfamiliar with video can also try to avoid "hosing the garden" with live stream video

Q6:
"..with a cameraman&full kit. Obviously the mobile phone is even smaller profile,so do u see a safety aspect of that in dangerous situations?"

Yes I'd agree. Any smaller camera lets you blend in better. But also interviewees are more comfortable with smaller cameras

More on Q6...
On safety, how about privacy? Social media can tell the world where you are, or where you're going

More on Q7...
w/ Twitter, or geolocating other updates - do you consciously think of your safety when considering what information you're broadcasting?

Sure, so use common sense. Though, back in 07, one of the benefits I saw of Twitter for a solo freelancer was letting people know my locat..

More on Q7...
What was the benefit specifically? And "Back in 07 "- have you changed your position?

..ion - for instance, knowing I could let a lot of people know quickly if I was in trouble

But recently I deliberately avoided Tweeting my location from a Central Asian country. Twitter DM is a great email backup in the field

Q8:
"I like ur field reporting kit http://su.pr/1ACjJb Obviously all important, but is there one tool you find you use more often than the others?"
More on Q8...
The thrust of the qs is, is there an all-in-one device for you yet?

These days it's a smart phone - it offers text, images, audio & video. I'm moving more in the direction of mobile reporting

More on Q8...
I think it's close, but not quite there. @sraquinn defines mobile journalist, mojo, as exclusively on mobile... I tend towards mojo as agile
More on Q8...
which can incorporate more than just the mobile phone
Q9:
"Do you see mobile reporting, or mobile journalism, as exclusively with a phone? Or could you not do it w/out the rest of the kit? #mojo"

I disagree a mojo is exclusively just using a mobile. It's a great digital capture device, but I wld continue to produce with more kit

More on Q9...
This has been going quite a while,so I'll wrap it up with just 3 more qs.
Q10:
"Your work is across a range of social media platforms - do find it easier to promote your work than perhaps it would have been in the past.."
More on Q10...
..,thanks to these platforms? Are you able to just point to your credentials, or does work now come looking for you?
Q11:
"Wanted to go back to one thing you said, that journos could avoid "hosing the garden" with live video. What do u mean by that?"

As a freelancer, having a blog is vital. It's your own digital space

If you want to use video, get some training. Borrow from VJ methods. If you have time, plan you sequence or interview for better quality

And play! Get to know your kit/platforms well and try to avoid learning on the run during a big story

Q12:
"Great.Last qs :) I noticed you've been enjoying a holiday in the south of France, where you caught up on some podcasts like @RNFutureTense"
More on Q12...
Do you like to keep up with Australian online media news?
More on Q12...
and do you see yourself as an experimenting pioneer of mojo or online news distribution?

Yes I try to keep up with Australian news/media online - Twitter is useful for that too

Q13:
"Sweet :) Thanks for talking to me! Hope you had a good holiday & it's rejuvenated you to keep producing great stuff for us to follow :) "
More on Q13...
Maybe we can get in a bit of self-promotion :) Where's the best place for ppl to find you online? link-love

Great chatting with you! Usually find me online as @fieldreports. My blog is notesfromthefield.typepad.com and also frontlineclub.com/blogs

More on Q13...
Excellent. Thanks Guy!
