A little bit of Search with Greg Boser
Date: Apr 12, 10 Time: 12:00 Category: Technology More about this Interview. |
| Q1: | "Hey Greg - thanks for coming along to do this tweeterview" |
No prob. Glad to do it.
| Q2: | "Not long until you are down here for #SMX Sydney, looking forward to it?" |
very much. I had a great time last year. Got to meet a lot of new people who I've stayed in contact with since.
More on Q2...
yeah and your contribution to the show last year was great.
| Q3: | "So about the show first you have 3 different presentations I think it is.. busy schedule." |
Yea, Barry likes to make you work. :) This is the only show I do a ppt for. :)
| Q4: | "lol. Your first session is all about links. Still one of the most important parts of SEO then?" |
I don't think we'll ever be to the point where links aren't the most important component of SEO. But the details with links is ..
..definitely changing.
More on Q4...
I assume that Social Media has a bit to do with this change?
More on Q4...
We have seen a big impact not so much in how twitter adds link value, but in how links are gathered using viral tweets etc..
Absolutely. In a lot of ways, Twitter has replaced blog posts and rss as the primary distribution method of new links. So for d..
..iscovery, it's huge.
| Q5: | "Of course that is leading to twitter being the latest gaming environment, for trying to game the system" |
Of course. That's how we roll. :)
More on Q5...
Hehe. My favourite comment of yours from last year was how SPAM is defined in SEO.....
More on Q5...
SPAM = Search Position Above Mine! I guess complaints come loudest from those losing the battle
Sites Positioned Above Mine
If you are above me, you are a spammer. If you're below me you just suck
More on Q5...
LOL. True but then it can be an emotive space
At least that is the opinion of most of my consulting clients. :)
| Q6: | "So how much consulting (versus Software Dev) are you and 3dog doing these days?" |
I've been trying to do more on the software side because we are planning on launching some new things with the release of WP 3.0
But I still do a lot of consulting. I always seem to get sucked back in.
More on Q6...
Well when you know your stuff I guess it is hard to not get attracted by paying clients.
More on Q6...
I have become a recent (last 2 years) WP convert. Finding it has a lot of potential
For the most part, we only take on performance based projects, so that helps trim it down a bit.

More on Q7...
..een talked about for a long time, but now appears to be actually happening. Your thoughts about it?
It hasn't been a big deal for us because we saw it coming quite awhile ago and have been preaching performance to all clients.
But I also don't think the impact will be quite as dramatic as some think.
More on Q7...
I guess many will over react and spend all their effort on 1 part of the puzzle
There are definitely some pathetically bloated sites that will (and should) take a hit, but most shouldn't notice it right away

It might also help drive the pendulum back a little more to lighter weight more functional sites rather than just pretty a..

Well, it certainly can be. It's definitely more scalable.
But I still really enjoy the consulting side of things, which is why we are going down more of a hybrid road.

Yea, it's pretty much a time issue. Plus, everytime I feel a rant building @aaronwall writes it first. :)
More on Q9...
LOL.
More on Q9...
There seems to be even more social media 'talkers' than SEO ones. One wonders where people get the time
in the near future, I'll be posting more but mostly in a private environment for clients.
Talking is part of the growth process as a professional. I think we all talked more than we did at some point. :)
| Q10: | "You recently talked on how you were starting to accept Google's dominance. (we have lived with it down here for longer)....." |
More on Q10...
but how much have you accepted them. You have always been a voice of reason about what they are doing?
I wasn't ever one that felt they would always be easily gamed. They certainly have the resources to win the war.
I'm not a big fan of the company itself. In a lot of ways, they are the new evil empire.
More on Q10...
I agree. PR is one thing but actions speak louder than words.
More on Q10...
So in your professional opinion how are Bing doing really. We need some real competition downunder!
It's hard to say. The current product is pretty weak. I'm hoping that they will hire the few smart people left at Yahoo.

More on Q11...
..hey aren't a big major. Are those speculative days behind us?
Yea, but the circumstances were much different. The old guard let quality slip for cash. G's not there yet in mos people's eyes.

More on Q11...
..ow long we have been around this stuff
The problem now is any competition is coming from another large and hated company.
More on Q11...
Yes.

And that's just not going to get the same kind of traction as the genius college kids thing

To be honest, I don't/haven't given mobile much thought. But the ipad/tablet thing might change my opinion on that.

Particularly as Iphone and Ipad are becoming significant.

But the cool thing about those two is they conform to the web rather than the other way around.
More on Q12...
true.

More on Q12...
I was a bb user but now couldn't do without the Ibone!
| Q13: | "Ok we have seen a big difference in traffic generated from Local Search options down under. Is that similar in the USA?" |
Yes. G is force feeding local results for a ton of non-geo queries now. That is the game changer I've been waiting for
Local's my new playground. :)
More on Q13...
We have seen pretty significant shifts based around it.
| Q14: | "Alright so apart from you "playing" around local at present, any other big ones that people should keep their eyes on in 2.." |
More on Q14...
..010?
The biggest thing that I think most people are overlooking right now is all the assumptive filtering G is doing now.
More on Q14...
can you explain that a little more
There's a lot to be learned playing with the "more options" button. :)
More on Q14...
Gotcha :P
We're seeing a lot more competitive phrases getting labeled as either informational or commercial. Once that happens u r screwed.
More on Q14...
Gee that is very interesting. And I assume you can't undo it once done?
More on Q14...
as in once the phrase is labeled that way
If G decides your top query is one that should be informational and you are tagged a shopping site it's very tuff to fix.
| Q15: | "Biggest current Web / Search peeve?" |
G's assumptive filtering. :) I can't stand that they do shit like that.
More on Q15...
and of course the average user has no idea what is happening to the results they see
Exactly. We've run into that with a few sites lately.
| Q16: | "So lastly then... How hard did you have to twist @oilman Todd's arm to come down to Sydney? ;)" |
It wasn't too hard. I just told him what a great time I had last year. Other than the freaky bat thing, it was an amazing tri..

LOL. WE might save that story for another time. Really appreciate your time. Look forward to buying you a beer and catchin..

I'll take you up on that beer. :) Thanks. it was fun.
