Senator Kate Lundy
Date: Aug 04, 10 Time: 17:30 Category: Politics / Government More about this Interview. |
| Q1: | "Thanks so much for your time today, Senator Lundy. So glad we could have this chat." |
It's a pleasure - it is a first, that's for sure!
| Q2: | "You've lots of experience as a Senator for the ALP. That makes you one of the longest serving members in the Upper House? .." |
Getting there :-) I have been elected since 1996 so 14 years in the Senate so far.
| Q3: | "What's been the biggest change you've seen/been a part of in that time (change from Opposition to Govt aside)? #ausvotes" |
The biggest change was when the Coalition got control of the Senate and they didn't negotiate with Labor or the crossbench.
That meant that for the first time the Howard Govt just rammed through their agenda, including workchoices.
More on Q3...
Indeed - and as an outcome with the Coalition losing govt at the last election and now Tony Abbott declaring WorkChoices d..
More on Q3...
.."dead, buried & cremated", it's surely making for an interesting election campaign. You're in the middle of your term?
Yes, having control of the Senate meant their real agenda was pushed through, with the political consequences of losing govt.
Territory Senators terms are the same as the House of Reps, so I go to election every time: so I am mid-campaign as we speak!
More on Q3...
Then you really are busy - your time being so precious, thanks again!
No problem :-) Today I opened the Canberra Careers market at the AIS and did a lunchtime shopping centre stall at Manuka shops :-)
More on Q3...
A politician's lot is certainly varied!
| Q4: | "It must be difficult to manage public life & spend valuable time with your family, let alone find time for painting!" |
More on Q4...
How do you use technology to help manage your life? #ausvotes
It is pervasive. I have a blackberry for work and a personal I-phone which comes in handy. And my laptop.... I also have a flip.
All of these things have a role - the flip is great for capturing family moments as well as work stuff for youtube...
I have a wordpress blog which is the main place I put stuff and interact with people. It's easy to use and maintain.
I also use the internet's social networking tools to demonstrate how we can have meaningful policy discussions as an example...
You have done your research! Painting is a hobby I love. I think I have it slightly easier than colleagues by living in Canberra..
...being in Canberra means when parliament is sitting, I still get to see my family! And it's beautiful.
More on Q4...
Canberra is a lovely place to visit... that said, look at all the devices you carry! That's one big handbag!
Haha. You are not the only one who says that....
| Q5: | "How do you think technology, particularly social media, is changing the face of a modern election campaign? #ausvotes" |
On Canberra, it's an incredible place. Most people who come here keep coming back because they discover the cultural institutions.
Q 5: Social Media changes everything. I know I am constantly experimenting. I want it to be an enhancer of democratic participat-
Sorry, democratic participation, rather than just another marketting tool, so we need to be thoughtful about that.
More on Q5...
Agree - twitter, for example, is not a broadcast tool...
I also think that as political parties we need to explore the possiblities. Some things will work, others won't.
Twitter is really interesting, for example Tweeterview is making keep my answers short (sort of) a worthy discipline! :-)
More on Q5...
One many of your colleagues should note for their next responses in parliament...
For me, Twitter is about both conversations and applied purposes (using hashtags) like the publicsphere conversations we conducted
More on Q5...
Some pollies use twitter quite well, as do some in the press pack (ping @latikambourke!). I think you're doing well. #ausv..
| Q6: | "Have you seen the MyPolitician (http://www.mypolitician.com.au) website? Looked yourself up yet?" |
| Q7: | "Have you seen the MyPolitician (http://www.mypolitician.com.au) website? Looked yourself up yet? #ausvotes" |
More on Q7...
Saw the video already - nice work. ;)
Just had a quick look at MyPolitician - wow who did that - how do they rate them?
More on Q7...
What do you think of politicians being rated by how they engage with ppl using things like social media & the internet? #a..
More on Q7...
It's based on activity via twitter, articles on blogs, etc, I understand...
I have seen at least three different rating systems with Twitter, all showing completely different results! eg: Is more better??
More on Q7...
I understand this one focuses on using social media tools to communicate/converse, rather than broadcast.
More on Q7...
Is more ever better, really?
Mypolitician doesn't have my flickr or youtube channel....
More on Q7...
Perhaps we need to set them straight & get them to add them!
More on Q7...
I think it's about overall usage of the mediums, not just blurting stuff out there. how you connect with voters.
It's all so new. I still get a really good response to posting video, for people seem to want a little more detail about issues.
| Q8: | "We've received a question from @AngelaDorizas..." |
| Q9: | "The Google youth vote is being held ahead of the Fed Election. Are you concerned the outcome will sway voters? #ausvotes" |
Hi @AngelaDorizas. I'm nott concerned about it swaying voters, it's a great way to let the views of younger people get some air!
I also want mention www.tweetmp.org.au and election.tweetlevel.com.au and openaustralia.org for a good way to see your MP.
| Q10: | "Congrats on your 2010 Changing the Net & Politics award nomination (vote here : http://bit.ly/bHtXT4)." |
More on Q10...
How does all the attention given you over your IT views sit with you? #ausvotes
Re: Q 10 Hey thanks for that! It's a credit to everyone involved in the publicspheres, including Pia Waugh.. :-)
More on Q10...
Harking back to Q7, I've been told your profile on www.mypolitician.com.au is now updated to include YouTube & Flickr...
My IT views? I think IT is so central, so important to our democracy, how we do govt, that's why NBN is critical infrastructure!
More on Q10...
You're active within the ACT community in support of the NBN rollout, particularly to the community in Gungahlin.
More on Q10...
How can other areas subjected to "RIM hell" garner similar support? #ausvotes
Hey, shout out to Mypolitician.com.au, thanks for the update - I am now number 3!
More on Q10...
I think the only way to become #1 on MyPolitician is to tweet about each bus you catch (ping @turnbullmalcolm).
Well, Check out ACTbroadband.net. Russ Gillon is a great example of a local champion who articulated the RIM problem.....
.... his work, my campaign for years and the local community council have all been demanding action on the poor ADSL services.
| Q11: | "Q from @skaye: Have you ever had a real job outside politics?" |
| Q12: | "Your thoughts on the proposed internet filter have been widely reported, incl Senator Conroy's 'slip of the tongue' respo.." |
More on Q12...
..nse.
More on Q12...
Are you happy that Labor may allow for an "opt out" scenario for the proposed internet filter? #nocleanfeed #ausvotes
There is a review of the RC classicfication underway and my most recent thoughts are here: http://tinyurl.com/23vpuva
| Q13: | "What do you think of Gizmodo's push to have you take over the IT/Communications portfolio post this election? #ausvotes" |
The only person who decides portfolios is PM Julia Gillard.
More on Q13...
I think Gizmodo live in hope, as do a number of us. ;)
| Q14: | "What does the ALP offer by way of policy advantage on ICT issues over the Coalition? #ausvotes" |
Please check out the ALP web site: http://www.alp.org.au/home/ and the investment in the NBN is for me, the most important.
@themolk, just to let you know I have to get going soon. #ausvotes, I wanted to mention the open govt agenda agimo.govspace.gov.au
More on Q14...
Noted - thanks - only one last question...
| Q15: | "What are the key messages you're hearing when you speak to people when you get out and about during the campaign? #ausvot.." |
Key messages? Job security, health, bandwidth, education, climate change, incl positive feedback re capital works in schools.
More on Q15...
The DER has kept me in a job! :)
