The tweeterview as recorded:

Q1:
"The Cyber Canary Here! Hello. This is my first time as an interviewer. I feel so NPR! My guest is Betsy Reed. Welc.."

Thanks Cyber Canary! Good to tweet with you again.

Q2:
"I met Betsy this summer at the Edith Bolling Wilson Birthplace. She helped me be a tweeter. Betsy, tell us about y.."
Q3:
"..ourself."

Well, apart from being the EBWB summer intern, I’m a senior history major at the University of Rochester in Rochester,..

Q4:
"Sorry for the cut off... "

.. NY.

No problem.

Q5:
"NY? "

Yes

Q6:
"Ah, sorry I see. You don’t sound like you are from New York. Are you from Rochester? "

I’m originally from TN. In fact, when I’m not in school, I spend my time with my family in a small town called White..

.. Bluff

Q7:
"We are TN fans, but lets talk museum. What was your most memorable experience during your internship at the Museum.."

Oh, come on, CC, do you even have to ask? Working with you trying to get you social network-ready definitely had to be m..

..y most memorable experience and my favorite.

Q8:
":) Other than me, what projects have you worked on for the Museum? "

Some of the projects included creating a timeline of world events in the life of Edith and creating Facebook & Twitter a..

..ccounts for the Museum.

Q9:
"Bet that was a long time line! Edith lived forever...unlike us canaries. What else? "

It was pretty long actually. I also worked on scanning and archiving part of the Museum’s collection of documents and ..

..researching various topics for other projects.

Q10:
"Interesting, but what we really want to know is do you have any good Edith Bolling Wilson gossip? "

Hm, off the top of my head, no. I don’t think I’m much in the loop, though. I bet the old gal had tons of juicy stor..

..ies tucked away.

Q11:
"No gossip. Bummer! Then at tell us what you think about Edith Bolling Wilson (no worries – she doesn’t pay att.."
Q12:
"..ention)? "

I think she was probably really feisty and definitely had a mind of her own.

Q13:
"For sure. "

I think, she also might have had such a strong personality, that some found her hard to get along with.

Q14:
" Like canaries!"

Exactly! However, I do like the fact that she was the first woman in D.C. to drive herself around. That's pretty awesome.

Q15:
"Yeah, can’t get enough of that story! So tell us, what do you like best about the Museum? "

They have a completely amazing director, L.S. King, who I was privileged enough to work with and learn from.

Q16:
"Other than her “highness Ms. King,” any other comments about the Museum? "

I also like that they’re preserving the history of a unique and strong American woman who played an important part in ..

..our country’s story.

Q17:
"True, true! Preservation is everything."

I’m kind of big on historical preservation in all its forms. It's a pretty great passion of mine.

Q18:
"Great passion! As the Museum grows, what is your ideal vision for its future? "

I think it would be fantastic if the upstairs was restored to what it would have looked like when the Bollings inhabited.

Q19:
"The classic historic house red velvet, don’t touch tour? "

Nope, instead it would be great if it was furnished so that visitors can closely examine and touch the period correct ob..

..jects.

Q20:
"Interesting idea. Everyone wants to touch history. Why do you want visitors to have such an experience?"

To provide a deeper connection and understanding for what life in antebellum urban Appalachia was like for the Bollings.

Q21:
"I like that, but lets talk more about me. What do you like most about me?"

You are pretty hilarious. I especially like your haikus.

Q22:
"I wish you were a canary. What beautiful music we would make. If you were a canary, what color would you be and wh.."
Q23:
"..y?"

Red! Just because red canaries are pretty.

Q24:
"Hmmm. Perhaps you have some cardinal leanings? We won’t get into that. What is your view on cats?"

I don’t mind them too much. I am mildly allergic to them and have to pump the allergy pills when they’re around. I..

..m more of a dog person, honestly.

Q25:
"So you are about to go back to college. Do you have big plans for this last year in Rochester? "

My main goal is to relax a bit and enjoy the remainder of my time there. I’m also hoping to be a Lasch fellow within o..

..ur history department.

Q26:
"Wow! A real fellow, eh? "

Yup, I’ll have the opportunity to take graduate classes a year early, and receive the title of Lasch fellow upon gradu..

..ation.

Q27:
"That sounds like a pretty big deal?"

It’s a significant honor within the department. An honor that comes with tons of extra reading and paper writing ha ha!

Q28:
"MMM. More Reading. Other than that, what is next for you in the time line future of Betsy Reed?"

Graduate school, hopefully. I’d like to enter a museum studies program somewhere.

Q29:
"We heard that you took the GRE. I remember all the time you studied when you could have been hanging out with me. .."
Q30:
"..What else?"

Oh yeah, that was such a fun experience (note sarcasm). I’m currently working on my applications, which isn’t so fun..

.., but it’s a means to an end, I suppose.

Q31:
"I was told that you have an interesting hobby involving something Edith would have known - wet plate photos. What .."
Q32:
"..is that? "

It’s a photographic process that was widely in use for much of the 19th century until the invention of dry plate photo..

..graphy.

Q33:
"How does it work?"

It involves making images by coating glass or metal plates in this stuff called collodion, treating it with silver nitr..

..ate, and exposing it to sunlight.

Q34:
"Fascinating."

The image is then developed in a dark room, making it a negative and then it is “fixed” in a potassium cyanide solu..

..tion to make it a positive.

Q35:
"Sounds complicated!"

It’s a really intricate and fascinating process, and makes one really appreciate the early photographers’ work and t..

..he fact that photography took off at all in the first place.

Q36:
"How did you get involved in wet plate photography?"

Ha, my family has a habit of picking up new hobbies. Last summer on a trip to Gettysburg, we happened upon a wet plate p..

..hotography studio.

Q37:
" I hear Gettysburg is a great place for all sorts of inspiration. SO you happen upon a wet plate photography studi.."
More on Q37...
..o and....

We had my image made there, and the photographer let the three of us watch the process. We all fell in love with it.

Q38:
"Ah love, glorious first love..."

Next thing we knew we were doing heavy research, buying supplies, and starting on a new family hobby.

Q39:
"What sort of images do you like to make?"

I like still life shots, especially images of antiquated technology i.e. typewriters, oil lamps, etc.

Q40:
"Is there somewhere online we can go to see your photographs? If so where? "

Aw, CC, you’re going to embarrass me!

Q41:
"Don’t be modest, Betsy! We want to see them!!! "
Q42:
"Still there, Betsy?"

Sorry about that, CC, technical difficulties unfortunately. Now back to your question...

Q43:
"No worries..."

Since you insist, I have some of our work on my flickr.com account. You can see them at: http://ow.ly/2uLpk

Q44:
"Cool! Everyone check it out when we are done! Have you ever photographed a canary?"

Funny you should ask…I haven’t photographed any with my wet plate camera. Long exposure times make it hard to captur..

..e moving things.

Q45:
"Tis true, a canary is all about movement and sound."

However, the other day I did snap a picture of two beautiful canaries at a pet shop with my camera phone.

More on Q45...
Hey, I saw those. Very nice! I’ll work on being a strong silent type, so you can photograph me.
More on Q45...
Guess we are about out of time, though.

Thanks for the chat, CC, was a blast as always.

Q46:
"Thank you, Betsy, for being my first interviewee! You rock, girl! Have a great time at college and tweet at me som.."

"And thank you to everyone who checked out this interview! Shameless promotion – follow me on twitter @thecyberca.."

Q48:
"And thank you for staying with us, even with the technical glitches!"
